Celebrate World Meditation Day 21-DEC-2024

Many people today find it difficult to focus for extended periods. Their minds often drift, either dreaming of the future or dwelling on the past—habits that hinder progress. To truly thrive, we must live in the present, fully concentrate on the task at hand, and remain actively engaged. For this the best tool is Meditation.

Recognizing the significance of mindfulness/Meditation, the United Nations has designated December 21 as World Meditation Day and even has a meditation room at its headquarters. Meditation, an ancient practice with countless benefits, calms the mind and fosters balance, health, and peace. It alleviates anxiety, depression, and insomnia while offering the potential to address lifestyle-related diseases.

Meditation varies according to the spiritual maturity and experience of the practitioner. At its core, meditation is about emptying the mind—a profound state achieved through practice. Beginners are encouraged to start by focusing on something, such as a beloved deity, a point of light, or the space between the eyebrows. While the mind may wander at first, consistent practice cultivates calmness and concentration. Over time, this can lead to a state of thoughtlessness, where one transcends worldly illusions (Maya) and realizes the true self, the "Chidananda Roopa"—a state of bliss and consciousness.

Meditation is an advanced stage of yoga. Foundational practices such as Yama (ethical restraints), Niyama (disciplinary practices), Asana (postures), and Pranayama (breath control) prepare one for meditation and, ultimately, Samadhi, the highest spiritual state. Since directly controlling the mind is challenging for beginners, starting with physical practices is recommended. Yoga asanas such as Vajrasana, Padmasana, or Siddhasana, followed by pranayamas like Nadi Shodhana, Ujjayi, and Bhramari, help condition the body and mind for meditation. Meditation has the potential to bring tremendous transformation in one's life , is capable of taking one to the level unimaginable. It cleanses all the accumulated samskaras/Karmas and you start designing and living your life as you wish. Destiney is truly in our hands if we sincerely practice meditation regularly.

India is blessed with a rich heritage of this wisdom, yet it is disheartening that only a few practice or believe in its potential. Ironically, many Westerners now teach yoga to Indians. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made remarkable strides in promoting yoga, with the United Nations and numerous countries celebrating World Yoga Day and, now, World Meditation Day.

Let us all commit to practicing yoga and meditation for at least 10 minutes daily. Within two months, this simple habit can lead to a profound transformation, bringing joy, balance, and happiness into your life. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. World Meditation day , Uttarayana start day is the best time to start yoga/meditation journey. Wishing you a fulfilling World Meditation Day and great success in your meditation journey!
